The 2011 Edmonton Local Council Spring Luncheon on March 17th, 2011 at the Fantasyland Hotel turned out to be a great success. There were a total of 61 in attendance which included 17 CAIB graduates.

The day began with the AGM and election for the Edmonton Local Council. Gord Enders, Chair of the Edmonton Local Council, announced the elected council members for the new term and assured everyone that the local brokers will be well served by this growing and committed group.

After the attendees enjoyed a delicious lunch, IBAA President Mardene Watson awarded the CAIB graduates with their well-deserved certificates. The CAIB designation presents one of a select few educational achievements in the career of an insurance professional and this milestone was duly celebrated amid a proud many peers.

After the graduation ceremony, Mardene Watson delivered her President’s speech which focused on the upcoming issues in the insurance industry followed by George Hodgson, IBAA Executive Officer, who engaged the audience with the ongoing political issues that affect the insurance broker. The speeches were capped off by the IBAA Operations Manager, Lori Bartlett, who informed the audience on new developments in continuing education, the implementation of webinars for CE credits, and the new and improved IBAA website.

All in all, the event was a success in combining business, celebration, and education amongst friends and colleagues.

2010 was a exciting year of growth for Edmonton Local Council. We were fortunate to have 6 members on the committee – Gloria Corkum, Kelly Scott, Cielito Villanueva, Sarah Oko, Garret Kindred, and myself. These individuals did a tremendous amount of work in organizing some excellent events and just as important, putting some defined structure to the council.

The highlights for 2010 included:

  • Annual golf tourney held June
    • over 130 golfers and total of 150 attendees enjoyed a fantastic day of golf
    • over $3000 donated to WICC
    • major tourney sponsors included Intact, PowerSoft, Crawford, Guarantee, Dominion, OneONOne Prize Indemnity, Economical, ClaimsPro, Aviva, Peace Hills, Pembridge, and RSA
  • Edmonton Local Council website launched
  • Christmas donation of $100 and Bipper blanket donated to
Fort Saskatchewan chapter of Operation Red Nose
  • Council structure developed with dedicated positions for voting
  • Formal nomination process implemented
  • Financial controls including signing authorities and disbursement guidelines
  • President’s Tour and CAIB Awards luncheon held in March with over 70 attendees

Thank you to the council members of 2010 for their commitment and efforts, to the IBAA office in particular Lori Bartlett and Harold Baker for their support and assistance, and of course, to the member brokers of Edmonton Local Council for their support and attendance.

I’m pleased to announce the 2011 Council Members are:

  • Chair Gord Enders, Direct-Line Insurance
  • Vice-Chair Gloria Corkum, Western Financial Group

  • Secretary Sarah Oko, Western Financial Group
  • Membership Director Darin Oakford, CJ Campbell Insurance
  • Special Events Director Kelly Scott, Western Financial Group
